How Long Will It Take to Remodel My Memphis, Tennessee Home?
As remodeling experts, one of the most common questions we receive is how long the process of remodeling a home will take. Unfortunately, there’s no easy answer to that question. Home remodeling is a complex and multifaceted process, and there are many factors to consider when it comes to the timeline for a remodel. We’ve rounded up some of the more common issues that need to be accounted for in your remodeling project timeframe.
The Extent of the Remodel
The first issue affecting the length of time your remodel will take is the size of the project. Are you just doing a cosmetic facelift to a few rooms in your home, or are you completely gutting and redoing every room in the home? Simple remodeling projects can be completed in a matter of weeks, while more complex and in-depth changes can take months.
The Age of Your Home
If you are looking to remodel an older home, you may find that the process takes a little longer. That’s because older homes typically have issues such as knob-and-tube wiring that must be replaced or asbestos that must be remediated before construction can be completed. There’s no way to be sure if you will have that sort of trouble with your older home, but it’s always a good idea to allow extra time if your home is 30 years old or more, just in case there are nasty surprises hiding in the walls.
The Materials and Finishes You Choose
In our experience as remodeling experts, another major issue that can impact the time it takes to remodel your home is the type of materials and finishes you choose.
Custom, rare or imported materials almost always take longer to order and deliver to the site, and complex materials and finishes take longer to achieve. If you’re in a hurry to get your home remodeled, be sure to involve your contractor in material choices if you’re unsure. They will be able to advise you about the best choices for speedy turnaround.
Get a Time Estimate from Your Remodeler
There really is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of how long your remodel will take, but most good remodeling companies will be able to give you an estimate of the time required once they’ve seen the plans and the site. If you want to get an idea of the length of time a job will take, ask companies to estimate time as well as cost when they do their initial site inspection. But remember that – just like price – if it seems too good to be true, it may well be.
Most remodeling projects take weeks or months to complete. All but the simplest projects will take some time to complete, but if you work with your remodeling company, you should be able to keep the job to a manageable timeframe and stay on track.
